David L. Steed

David Steed has been practicing with the firm since 1984.  David's practice has had a special emphasis in healthcare matters for many years.  This includes representing physicians and groups in disputes with third-party payors; serving as outside counsel to the Tennessee Medical Association and the Nashville Academy of Medicine for many years; the defense of physicians in medical malpractice litigation; the representation of physicians in matters before the licensing boards; advising physicians in contractual matters; and other similar matters.

David has successfully represented many physicians and groups in matters involving disputes with third-party payors.  He has successfully recovered large sums owed by third-party payors in many matters involving complex billing and coding issues.  Consequently, he has developed a working knowledge of this area which contributes to efficient handling of disputes of this type.

David has been involved in class actions filed against third-party payors.  One such ongoing action is a class action filed on behalf of TMA member against four major insurance companies accused of bundling, downcoding, and other unfair claims payment practices.

David has successfully represented physicians in contested matters before the Board of Medical Examiners.  He has frequently represented physicians in disciplinary actions involving hospital medical staff privileges.

David has also been involved in handling other non-healthcare related issues for healthcare professionals.  This includes personal injury actions on behalf of injured physicians and other professionals, business disputes, and other adversarial matters.  David has frequently advised physicians on contractual issues with other physicians, with hospitals, and with other businesses.

David is a member of the American Society of Medical Association Counsel, the Health Law Sections of the Tennessee and American Bar Associations, the Defense Research Institute and other organizations.  He is a past member of the Board of the Richland/West End Neighborhood Association.  He has been actively involved in public health volunteer work, serving as a volunteer with the American Lung Association, the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society, the Coalition on Smoking or Health (now CHART).  He was the recipient of the President's Award of the Nashville Academy of Medicine (1995), the 1996 State Citizenship Award of the American Lung Association, the 1995 Capitol Dome Award of the American Cancer Society.  As the husband of a general surgeon, David has a unique understanding of many of the issues facing physicians in the current challenging healthcare environment.
